چکیده

INTRODUCTION The addition of copper salts to dense suspensions of unwashed sea-urchin spermatozoa in sea water markedly stimulates the O2 uptake of the suspension (Rothschild & Tuft, 1950). An investigation of the Cu content of sea-urchin semen and seminal plasma was therefore of interest and is the subject of this note. At the same time the coelomic fluid of Echinus esculentus and sea water were analysed for the same metal. The only recent investigation of the Cu content of sea-urchins was carried out by Webb(io,37). He found that the coelomic fluid of E.esculentus contained 1-04 /ig./ml. Cu, eighty times as much as the sea water (Loch Ine) from which the sea-urchins were taken. The Cu content of this sea water was 0-013 /ig./ml., assuming a chlorinity of 19%. According to Sverdrup, Johnson and Fleming (1942), the Cu content of sea water varies from o-ooi to o-oi /ig./ml.

The Physiology of Sea-urchin Spermatozoa Action of Versene

A description of the physiology of sea-urchin spermatozoa requires, among other things, an explanation of two special characteristics which these spermatozoa possess. First, immediately after dilution, the Og uptake per spermatozoon is higher in a dilute than in a dense suspension. Secondly, the decline in sperm motility and fertilizing capacity is more rapid in a dilute than in a dense suspens...

Determination of developmental stages of embryo in the Sea Urchin, Echinometra mathaei

Sea Urchin is one of the most useful tools in developmental biology studies because this organism has the simplest kind of developmental stages. We aimed to determine developmental stages and timetable of Echinometra mathaei embryo (the species of Persian Gulf). The spawning of E. mathaei was induced by 0.5M KCl injection (1ml) into the coelomic cavity. After fertilization, embryos were placed ...

Effects of Salinity on Embryonic and Early Larval Development of a Tropical Sea Urchin, Salmacis sphaeroides

Effects of salinity on fertilization, embryonic stage, and early larval development and growth performances of short-spined white sea urchin, Salmacis sphaeroides were conducted under a controlled laboratory condition. The experiment was carried out with seven salinity treatments (15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 PSU), each of which was triplicated. Significantly highest fertilization success was ...

Antibacterial and Antioxidant Characteristics of Pigments and Coelomic Fluid of Sea Urchin, Echinodermata Mathaei Species, from the Persian Gulf

Background & Aims: Sea urchin immune responses are directly exposed to potentially pathogenic microorganisms and develop defence responses mainly based on immunocytes and humoral factors contained in the coelomic fluid. In addition, the polyhydroxylated 1, 4-naphthoquinone pigments are found to possess excellent antimicrobial, antialgal and antioxidant activities. The present ...

Effects of mercury on embryonic development and larval growth of the sea urchin Echinometra mathaei from the Persian Gulf

This study investigated the effects of increasing mercury (Hg) concentration on early developmental stages of sea urchin, Echinomethra mathaei, as a bioindicator. The toxicity test was carried out after the gamete released induction and fertilization in six concentrations of mercury within the range of 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 µg/L. Embryos samples were incubated for 30 h in control and test so...
